Bisogna ammettere che in questi anni i titoli che in qualche modo hanno fatto riferimento alla guerra, difficilmente si sono distanziati da tematiche già viste e riviste. La varietà dei generi proposti c’è stata ma nella maggior parte dei casi i conflitti vengono raccontati dal punto di vista di militari e capi di governo, raramente è stato dato spazio a ciò che vi è dietro le quinte.
Fortunatamente negli ultimi anni abbiamo visto debuttare sul mercato opere decisamente più mature come This War of Mine. Proprio This War of Mine ha saputo stupire piacevolmente ricevendo diversi riconoscimenti per la cura e l’attenzione con le quali è stato trattato un tema delicato come la guerra.
La software house polacca, 11 bit ha deciso di prendere spunto da una storia vera del nostro passato, non troppo distante dai giorni nostri, per creare un titolo che desse spazio alle persone comuni che vivevano ma sopratutto subivano quel periodo contraddistinto da atrocità e sofferenza, mostradoci l’impatto che avevano su di essi.
Trama e gameplay
Il gioco è ispirato agli eventi dell’Assedio di Sarajevo nella prima metà degli anni ’90, che vide l’intera popolazione bloccata nella città, mentre le forze bosniache e jugoslave erano impegnate in un braccio di ferro armato durato quattro anni. Ad ogni nuova partita il gioco ci permette di scegliere un gruppo di civili con i quali sopravvivere alla guerra.
Per la prima partita il gruppo è fisso e serve per farci comprendere i meccanismi del gioco, tramite il tutorial guidato, succesivamente ci è possibile scegliere tra gruppi anche molto eterogenei, addirittura bambini. Parlo di “ogni nuova partita” perché This War of Mine: The Little Ones è un survival game, di quelli nei quali non c’è ritorno dalla morte quindi non è possibile ricaricare la partita qualora si sia fatto un errore fatale.
Ma vediamo come funziona il tutto, Indipendentemente dal gruppo con il quale si inizia la partita, il gioco ci pone all’interno di una casa su più piani divisa in sezione laterale, ormai devastata dalla guerra e piena di detriti. Questo è il rifugio che i nostri protagonisti hanno deciso di usare poichè la guerra li ha sottratti alle loro vite. In base al gruppo scelto, può trattarsi di parenti o persone che si conoscevano già, oppure di individui incontrati casualmente.
Ci sono diversi fattori necessari alla sopravvivenza: il crafting, il commercio e la ricerca all’esterno. Le prime due attività sono condotte entrambe durante la fase diurna delle partite: utilizzando le risorse a nostra disposizione possiamo creare banchi da lavoro con i quali realizzare sia oggetti da porre in casa che armi e attrezzi da portare con noi. Essendo la casa inizialmente vuota, tutto va creato: i letti per garantire un sonno riposante ai nostri sopravvissuti, una stufa per scaldarsi durante l’inverno (che dovremo alimentare con legna) e tutto cio che è necessario per mangiare e dissetarsi. La terza attivita si svolge durante la notte permettendoci di esplorare luoghi al di fuori del nostro rifugio, fondamentali per accumulare più risorse possibili.
Lo scopo?
Lo scopo finale di ogni partita è portare i superstiti (almeno uno di loro) incolumi fino al tanto agognato “cessate il fuoco” tra le forze ostili, che solitamente avviene dopo circ 40 giorni dall’inizio della partita, a seconda del gruppo selezionato. Il progresso del gioco è infatti scandito dall’avanzare dei giorni nel corso del conflitto.
Father’s Promise la forza di un padre
Ora la serie cerca di intraprendere una nuova strada con This War of Mine Stories: Father’s Promise, un DLC che segue una struttura decisamente più story driven e che si basa sull’audio-drama dell’autore polacco Łukasz Orbitowski, un’opera che ha vinto diversi premi e che ci farà vestire i panni di Adam, un padre che cerca di salvare la propria figlia dagli orrori della guerra fuggendo dalla città. Il contenuto aggiuntivo è disponibile su steam al prezzo di 1,99€ altrimenti è acquistabile il season pass con tutti i 4 episodi narrativi a 4,99€.
Conclusioni
Il maggior pregio di This War of Mine: The Little Ones è indubbiamente quello di farci vivere la guerra attraverso gli occhi dei civili. Con i personaggi del gioco si crea un legame per cui la morte di alcuni di loro e le difficili decisioni che siamo costretti a prendere, ci turbano profondamente e allo stesso tempo ci avvicinano e ci fanno comprendere al meglio le atrocità che hanno subito.
