Nature Forever. Dall’Arte abitabile alla New Media Art
Nature Forever – in mostra al Museo MAXXI di Roma dal 13 Aprile al 15 Ottobre 2017, a cura di Hou Hanru, Bartolomeo Pietromarchi e Marco Scotini – è un percorso visivo e interattivo che, seguendo cronologicamente la vita di Piero Gilardi, ne evidenza la personalità poliedrica. Artista torinese di spicco nella scena contemporanea e d’avanguardia, Gilardi si distingue per l’impegno costante nella realizzazione di un’arte fruibile e al servizio dell’uomo, sempre intrisa di un significato politico e sociale.
Tema centrale e ripercorribile lungo l’intera Galleria 3 che ospita la mostra è il rapporto Uomo-Arte-Natura.
Nel passare dall’arte abitabile degli esordi alle animazioni politiche degli anni Settanta, fino alla tecnologica New Media Art e al progetto del PAV (Parco d’Arte Vivente) del 2008, si può notare come l’opera di Gilardi si contraddistingua non per essere icona e oggetto di semplice contemplazione bensì un’arte da vivere e di cui fare esperienza in prima persona. L’arte implica relazione ed interazione, la centralità di un pubblico che non è più esclusivamente spettatore ma diventa attore.
La prima sezione che apre la mostra è quella dedicata ai famosi Tappeti-natura degli anni Sessanta. Composte di poliuretano espanso, queste opere riproducono una natura artificiale con lo scopo di essere toccate e calpestate, per far sì che ci si possa sdraiare sopra e giocare. Mare, Torrente secco, Terreno di alta montagna e Frutta Caduta sono solo alcuni di questi Tappeti in esposizione, emblema di quell’arte abitabile che renderà l’artista celebre da subito.
Alla fine degli anni Sessanta Gilardi abbandona i Tappeti-natura e si allontana dal mondo dell’arte ufficiale. Nonostante questo, il coinvolgimento del pubblico resta un tema centrale della sua attività.
La seconda sezione della mostra è quella relativa agli anni Settanta, periodo in cui l’arte assume un ruolo di comunicazione attiva nella realtà politica e sociale: le animazioni politiche – manifesti, maschere e sagome monumentali di gommapiuma – vengono portate direttamente nelle manifestazioni di piazza dove la protesta si trasforma in festival popolare, dove si assiste ad una teatralizzazione e carnevalizzazione del mondo e dove la strada diventa luogo di libera espressione per affrontare problematiche economiche, ecologiche e sociali.
Si giunge così alla terza sezione della mostra contraddistinta dalla New Media Art: con l’arrivo degli anni Ottanta e l’avanzare delle tecnologie, Gilardi avverte che la potenza di queste ultime può essere sfruttata per accrescere i concetti da lui tanto perseguiti di relazione, partecipazione e multisensorialità.
Emblematica è in tal senso Inverosimile (1989). Si tratta di una sala ricoperta di prato sintetico dove piante di vigneto finte si muovono e si illuminano a ritmo di musica. Una musica che va di pari passo con immagini di vortici e figure regolari caleidoscopiche proiettate su di uno schermo che fa da sfondo all’intero ambiente. L’agglomerato di suoni, immagini e colori di quest’opera evoca scene primordiali che sembrano voler ricollocare lo spettatore in una dimensione originaria, naturale, ludica a tratti fiabesca e collettiva, senza mai smettere di interrogalo sul rapporto tra uomo, natura e tecnologia.
Coinvolgere ed impegnare l’uomo, reinserirlo in una collettività attiva. L’opera di Gilardi culmina con il progetto artistico-culturale del 2008, di cui è esposto un modello nella parte finale della mostra: il PAV, Parco d’Arte Vivente, centro artistico sperimentale e luogo di incontro tra pubblico e artisti, sorto in un’ex area industriale della periferia di Torino.
L’immersione all’interno di questa atmosfera artificialmente naturale, dai colori accesi e fiabeschi e contraddistinta dal carattere ludico dell’interazione con l’opera d’arte, fa della mostra uno spazio di scambio, dove adulto e bambino fruiscono ugualmente dei tappeti-natura, delle enormi maschere di gommapiuma, degli alberi che riproducono il canto degli uccelli. Una mostra che veicola e lancia in modo alternativo l’invito a ripensarci come collettività viva e attiva all’interno della natura.
