Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap
Con tutta probabilità solo i più vetusti videogamers riconosceranno già dal nome questo titolo datato anni ‘80 che dilettava i possessori di Sega Master System. Era l’epoca d’oro degli 8-bit e Wonder Boy rappresentava il massimo esponente di questo genere “adventure”.
Aveva un tale successo da essere plagiato in maniera spudorata ed essere riproposto in versione praticamente identica come accadde ad esempio su GameBoy con i titoli Adventure Island.
Sono ormai passati quasi trent’anni dalla pubblicazione del titolo targata Westone e DotEmu in collaborazione con Lizardcube, che ringraziamo per averci fornito il loro pregiato lavoro, ci ripropongono una versione modernizzata in toto di questo terzo capitolo della famigerata serie Wonder Boy.
8-bit in un click
Il lavoro eseguito è semplicemente geniale: è stato preso il gioco originale ed è stato completamente ridisegnato a mano e con una colonna sonora arrangiata di sana pianta seguendo però le melodie originali ottenendo un risultato davvero ottimo.
La cosa che ha creato maggior stupore, in senso positivo si intende, è la possibilità di trasformare il tutto in grafica 8-bit originale così come è possibile farlo con la colonna sonora e gli effetti audio catapultando così i giocatori nel passato con un solo click creando un effetto nostalgia spaventosamente forte.
Ma questa opportunità non rappresenta la caratteristica principale di questa ripubblicazione, infatti il lavoro apportato al disegno e alla musica sono incredibilmente curati e che portano questo gioco ad una nuova vita riproponendo l’avventura così come era all’epoca sia nel gameplay che nell’esperienza totale con la prerogativa di risultare nel 2017 attuale e al contempo di scostarsi dagli empi lavori di remaster e remake che ormai soffocano il panorama videoludico.
Le uniche aggiunte sono costituite dalla possibilità di scegliere il sesso del nostro personaggio e il grado di difficoltà.
Trarre forza dalla maledizione
L’inizio dell’avventura coincide con la fine del capitolo predecessore in cui Wonder Boy sconfigge Mecha Dragon e cade in trappola della maledizione trasformandolo così in una lucertola sputafuoco perdendo le sembianze umane e diventando incapace di utilizzare l’equipaggiamento di spade, scudi e armature ottenibili nel corso del gioco. Da puntualizzare questa piccola chicca che nell’80 fu davvero stimolante poiché non erano molti i giochi in cui poter personalizzare l’arsenale del proprio personaggio.
Continuando l’avventura saranno utilizzabili diverse trasformazioni ognuna delle quali prevede punti di forza e punti deboli e che permetteranno di raggiungere nuove aree altrimenti non raggiungibili e quindi capaci di far proseguire la strada verso l’antica reliquia capace di spezzare la maledizione e donare nuovamente la forma umana ormai perduta.
Il gameplay è quindi variegato e mai identico e richiederà del tempo per essere perfezionato sia per la difficoltà insita nel gioco, che per il cambio di abilità e movenze che le trasformazioni nelle varie forme imprimeranno al personaggio. Anche l’utilizzo di vari oggetti collezionabili quali lance, pozioni e magie come palle di fuoco influiscono sull’esperienza di gioco garantendoci un’adattabilità nelle varie forme animalesche.
Essendo appartenente alla stirpe degli “adventure” l’esplorazione rappresenta l’attrazione principale adornata dal fattore gdr della personalizzazione degli armamenti. C’è una sorta di libertà nell’esplorazione che permetterà di scoprire nuove aree in anticipo rispetto all’avanzamento della storia lasciando al giocatore la scelta di avventurarsi dove meglio crede. Passeremo infatti dalla città principale, fornita di ogni sorta di comodità come l’armeria, il negozio e l’infermeria, a deserti, sotterranei, castelli e molte altre ambientazioni suggestive.
L’innovazione del passato lanciata nel presente
Quello che ci troviamo di fronte è un progetto più unico che raro capace di riportare in auge un titolo che nel passato rappresentò l’avanguardia del videogioco.
La tempra di questo Wonder Boy è stata riadattata alle aspettative grafiche del presente riuscendo a contestualizzare un lavoro svolto ventisette anni fa ed il tutto senza fare gioco forza sulla nostalgia. Il lavoro di totale svecchiamento adoperato con una ricalibrazione grafica interamente disegnata a mano è il motivo che più ci porta a consigliarvi questo titolo. Non siamo di fronte alla solita riesumazione ma bensì innanzi ad una nuova vita creata ex novo, ma rispettando per filo e per segno ciò che fu all’epoca Wonder Boy lasciano invariata l’anima.
Di certo non aspettatevi un gioco facile e di rapida intuizione se siete novizi nel genere adventure old school, le difficoltà e le avversità sono sparpagliate ovunque, aspettatevi dunque un alto livello di sfida. Per quanto riguarda invece la durata di gioco, se non fosse per l’elevato tasso di mortalità e la non intuitiva individuazione del percorso corretto, essa non è di grande portata e una volta terminato il gioco sarà possibile completarlo in un due o tre ore.
Forse il prezzo di lancio pari a 19,99 euro non rispecchia la godibilità del titolo vista la sua relativa brevità, ma se siete alla ricerca di un titolo appartenente alla vecchia scuola non pensateci su due volte perché rimarrete soddisfatti dall’accattivante giocabilità.
